The First Trailer for "Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie 🐿️" Just Dropped

(This is the poster for Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie 🐿️.)

Well guys, after months and months, Netflix finally put out a trailer for the upcoming SpongeBob 🧽 movie, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie 🐿️. I've already talked a little bit about this movie quite a few months back, back in January, after I learned of its existence from the news that it was leaked online. If you want to know what I had to say about it when I first found out about it, go read it. It's on my blog, and it's on my DeviantART page.

But, what I basically said was that I was willing to give it a chance. If it's good, then great, we have another good SpongeBob 🧽 movie that we can enjoy for the rest of time, and it's not, and it's bad, then that's a shame, but it is what it is, and we just move on. My whole world won't be destroyed if Saving Bikini Bottom is a bad movie, even if Sandy 🐿️ is my favorite character in the show bar none.

The reason why I said all that in my other post is that I wanted to be fair, and to be reasonable because I saw all this hate for the movie after it was leaked, and some people watched it, and just started dunking on it long before it has been officially released. Pretty much tanking this movie's success before it even had a real chance. I didn't like that. I didn't like that it was leaked in the first place, and I didn't like that people were watching it and hating on and trying to convince other people not to watch it when it came out, it just felt really wrong to me. I always like supporting the official release whenever I can, and I feel that others should do. It's the respectful and responsible thing to do.

And honestly, after watching the trailer multiple times now, I really don't see what those people saw in this movie that made them hate it so much? It looks fine, it looks harmless. It doesn't look like anything particularly egregious or offensive, and it's anywhere close to being the worst that this franchise has had to offer. It just looks like your average SpongeBob 🧽 adventure, only Sandy 🐿️ is the main protagonist and SpongeBob 🧽 is the tag along, he's the sidekick.

It's basically that same buddy comedy formula that all of the SpongeBob 🧽 movies have had so far, with The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 🧽 having SpongeBob 🧽 and Patrick as the buddy duo, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water 🧽💦 having SpongeBob 🧽 and Plankton as the buddy duo (at least for the first half), and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On the Run 🧽 having SpongeBob 🧽 and Patrick as the buddy duo once again. This time, it's Sandy 🐿️ and SpongeBob 🧽, and I'm okay with that.

Sandy 🐿️ has always been sidelined in the movies, and has either just been a background character or just a supporting role. Well now, she's center stage, and I'm all for it. The only things I do kind of take issue with, at least from seeing this trailer, is the plot and the animation. I'll first talk about the animation because that's the thing that I have the least to say about it. The animation looks really cheap looking.

I understand that they're going for this CGI/live action hybrid look that Sponge On the Run 🧽 went with, but it doesn't look anywhere as good as that film did, regardless of what people thought about that film. You can definitely tell that this movie had a much smaller budget than Sponge On the Run 🧽, which makes sense. This is a Netflix exclusive, it's been released straight-to-streaming, so of course they weren't going to allocate the same amount of money 💵 to it that they would a theatrically released film. Given that this is a Netflix movie, they have not disclosed what the actual budget of this movie is. Just like how they've never disclosed what the budgets of The Loud House Movie and The Casagrandes Movie were either.

The story doesn't really seem that great. From what it seems in the trailer, basically this evil laboratory called BOOTS Marine Biology Lab steals all of Bikini Bottom, just lifts the entire town and its residents up from the water 💦 and bring them all to the surface, and tries to sell each of the Bikini Bottom residents off as pets to children on the surface. And it's up to Sandy 🐿️ and SpongeBob 🧽 to save everyone. But, since all of their friends have been kidnapped and are being held captive by BOOTS, they have to turn to Sandy 🐿️'s family for help.

So, we're not only getting the first SpongeBob 🧽 movie to center around Sandy 🐿️, but we're also going to see more of Sandy 🐿️'s family. We've already seen a few members of Sandy 🐿️'s relatives in the show itself, like we've seen her cousin from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, we've seen her sister, and we've seen her nieces. But now, we're seeing more of her immediate family, her parents, her brothers, her grandfather maybe, her uncle.

Hopefully they can make up for the weak story with some entertaining character interactions between Sandy 🐿️ and SpongeBob 🧽. One of the main draws of this movie, one of the main appeals will be seeing Sandy 🐿️'s family too, and seeing the personalities they came up with for them. Even they aren't fully canonized to the series, and we don't see this iteration of Sandy 🐿️'s family in the show ever again, at least we'll get to see them in this movie and hopefully, they'll be entertaining and work well for this movie.

Seeing this plot though, with the Bikini Bottomites being captured and sold off as pets, kind of makes me think of that Disney Channel show, Fish Hooks, which was about these talking fish 🐠 living inside fish tanks inside a pet store, and they're like teenagers in high school, and the whole show's like a teen comedy, but where everyone's a fish 🐠 or some other kind of sea creature or freshwater creature. Like, there's a character that's a clam in the show, and they've a lobster 🦞 appear once as a giant monster terrorizing the fish 🐠 living inside the tanks.

The show even combined live action with 2D animation on multiple occasions just like SpongeBob 🧽 often does. This makes me wish that we could've gotten a crossover with SpongeBob 🧽 and Fish Hooks, it could've worked really well. They had so much in common, almost as if Disney wanted Fish Hooks to be their SpongeBob 🧽. But, since these shows are obviously owned by two completely different companies, this crossover will likely never happen.

Maybe one day SpongeBob 🧽 will crossover with something in film or TV. He's already crossed over with other Nickelodeon shows in video games, such as the Nicktoons series, the Nickelodeon Kart Racers series, and the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl series. But they have yet to dedicate an entire TV special or movie to that idea of crossing SpongeBob 🧽 over with another show. My pick is The Loud House.

The movie is set to release on August 2, 2024, so expect a full review of this movie next month hopefully. I've had difficulties accessing Netflix due to them ending password sharing. It's why I haven't seen Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, or Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, or the animated Skull Island series that's apart of the MonsterVerse yet. But, I'm willing to go through the hassle of trying to get through Netflix's password block which prevents you from accessing Netflix unless you have your own account just so I can watch and review this movie and those other movies and shows I just mentioned.

Rebel Moon – Part Two is the only one of those that I mentioned that actually is a movie. But, speaking of Rebel Moon though, when I do eventually watch and review the second part, I will post the review both on my blog and on DeviantART just like I did with the review of the first part, and just like did with the previous post I wrote talking about Saving Bikini Bottom and this one about the trailer to that movie.
