The Second “Super Mario Bros.” Movie Has a Title
Ladies, and gentlemen ♀︎♂︎, we have a title! I know that I’m to the party on this, but better late than never I say. I wrote a post when Warner Bros. and Legendary unveiled the title for the next MonsterVerse movie, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and announced that it was officially in production, I wrote a review of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which this is obviously a sequel to, I included that movie in my New Year’s Eve Recap for 2023, and I’ve written a few dedicated posts about Mario ever since; including the one I wrote on MAR10 Day 2024 where they officially announced that there was going to be a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. So, it’s only fitting that I do a post about the title announcement and the little teaser trailer I guess you could call it that they did back a couple of weeks ago, on Friday September 12, 2025. This is kind of a follow up to the post I wrote last year talking about the sequel announcement since we now know what the title is, and we kind of know what it’s going to be about based on the title. Hopefully, this doesn’t take me two or three days to write like my Nobody (2021) and Fight or Flight ✈️ reviews, hopefully I can get it done in one day, like ADV Films Promo Video Circa 1999 post did. If I can get it done in one day, then this’ll be the last month for September 2025, and if I can’t, and I ended up having to write it an extra day or two, then it’ll be the first post of October 2025. Either I hope you enjoy.
So yeah, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the title for the upcoming sequel. I was hoping that the sequel was going to be The Second Super Mario Bros. Movie, so that there wouldn’t be as much pressure to make the plot based on a specific game, and they could make the plot whatever want, take bits and pieces from each game in the series if they so pleased. Maybe, it would’ve kept the fans guessing as to what it would be about. But no, with this title we definitely know that movie is going to take place in space, and the plot is going to be heavily based on the two Super Mario Galaxy games. I’m sure they’ll base it more off of the first Super Mario Galaxy game than the second, though I’m sure they’ll take some elements from Super Mario Galaxy 2, since, if there is a third one, they’ll probably want to base it off of a different Mario game. Besides how different are the two Mario Galaxy games are from each other anyways? Everything that I’ve heard about Mario Galaxy 2 is that it’s pretty much the same game as the first one, but again, like they just gave you more of what you got in Mario Galaxy 1.
Some people were suggesting at the time the trailer dropped and the title was officially revealed, that they decided to do this, to base the second movie around Super Mario Galaxy, because Nintendo is re-releasing the two Mario Galaxy games on the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2 as a bundle called Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2; similar to what they did with the first two Pikmin games, with Pikmin 1 + 2; which I currently have in my possession. It’s set to come out on Thursday October 2, 2025, which depending on when this goes up, is either two days away or it’s already out. Like, Nintendo pleaded and begged Illumination to base the next Super Mario movie on Super Mario Galaxy to coincide with the release of this remastered port of the two games. I’m not entire sure if I believe that because the movie doesn’t come out until 2026, April 2026 to be more specific, and this combo pack is coming this year, in just a matter of days (or already is out). I would’ve had an easier time believing that if that combo pack were coming in 2026 as well, around the same time as the movie. So, these two things based on Mario Galaxy coming out almost back-to-back may very well be just a coincidence; not everything is planned or connected; I think this might be a case of people finding patterns where there are none; of course, if I’m wrong and the people who made this movie confirm that it was made to coincide with the re-release of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, I’ll be the first one to correct myself. But, Mario Galaxy will still be on people’s minds when the movie comes out; people will be in full Galaxymania.
I am a bit disappointed that they didn’t base the second movie on Super Mario Sunshine ☀️, the mainline Super Mario game for the Nintendo GameCube, and they’re just skipping over to Super Mario Galaxy, the mainline Super Mario game for the Nintendo Wii. As an avid Sunshine ☀️ fan and defender, I would’ve loved if that game finally got its time in the Sun ☀️ (no pun intended), got the proper respect it deserves, and was the basis for the second 3D animated Super Mario movie; just the setting of Isle Delfino, the Piantas, and the water effects 💦 alone, with a big budget, would be great to see on the big screen. I even expected them to do Super Mario Odyssey and make that basis for the second movie since it’s the most recent mainline Super Mario game and is one of the most popular ones, but they might still do that one for the third movie if this one is successful enough to get a third movie, which it probably will; I think this movie will make a lot of money 💵 when it comes out, and may even outgross the first one, which made $1.361 billion 💵; it’ll probably a billion also. Don’t be surprised if the third one comes out years down the line, and it’s called The Super Mario Odyssey Movie. I even expected them to base the second movie around Super Mario Land, so that they could introduce Princess Daisy since Princess Daisy has historically been Luigi’s love interest ❤️ (while Princess Peach is Mario’s) and a lot of fans have been requesting Princess Daisy to be in these films.
But, it’s not surprising why they went in this direction, why they’re doing Mario Galaxy, and it’s not because Nintendo is releasing two games on the Switch and the Switch 2, and they wanted a movie to coincide with it. It is one of the more popular entries in the Super Mario series, and one of the more well liked entries in the series. It’s certainly more well liked than Mario Sunshine ☀️ is, and you could argue that it was made in response to that game; it was a reaction to Mario Sunshine ☀️, or more specifically, a reaction to the reaction to that game. The fact that Nintendo is re-releasing these two games, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 together in a single combo pack shows how much of an enduring legacy these two games have; how much of an impact they’ve made on the Mario fanbase and on the gaming industry as a whole; the desire to play these games and keep playing them still exists, and while I’d argue that desire still exists for Mario Sunshine ☀️, it admittedly isn’t as much as the desire people have to replay the two Mario Galaxy games. And to be fair, it’s not like this is random or it came out of nowhere, they did set up the fact that the next movie in the franchise would be based on Mario Galaxy, with that one line that Princess Peach says Mario when she’s giving him exposition about this world and how it works, about how there’s a whole universe to explore and there are many other galaxies out there; it’s like they were planting seeds for the next movie to be about Mario exploring those other galaxies.
The one upside side for me about this being an adaptation of Super Mario Galaxy is that we’re finally going to see Rosalina in one of these movies, in this animation style that Illumination uses for these movies. I love Rosalina, she’s quite possibly my favorite Mario princess, I know she’s a lot of other people’s favorite too. She was my main in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I liked playing as her in Super Mario 3D World when she was made available, I know everyone got hyped when she appeared in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope; like she was effectively the main villain in that as Cursa, but when she reverted back to her old self, everyone got hyped, they were so happy to see her 🤩. I’m wondering what they’re going to do with her in this movie, how they’re going to write her, how they’re going to portray her, and who they’re going to pick to voice her. They got Anya Taylor Joy to voice Princess Peach in the first movie, so they’re going to have to someone at that level to voice Rosalina.
I even wonder how they’re going to make her look, because even they kept the designs mostly the same as they were in the games in the previous movie, they still made minor tweaks to them since it was a feature film and you were going to hear them to speak in something other than grunts or gibberish and speak more often, and the character models have to be even more expressive than they were in the games. So, movie version of Mario didn’t look 100% like game version of Mario, and movie version of Peach didn’t look 100% like game version of Peach, so Rosalina isn’t going to look 100% like her video game counterpart. She’ll still maintain overall look, like she’ll look recognizable as Rosalina, but they’ll do some minor tweaks here and there to fit a motion picture, mostly in the face. I wonder what her face will ultimately look like. I’m sure it’ll look good because Princess Peach’s face looked pretty good in the first movie.
Speaking of Princess Peach, I wonder what role she’ll have in the movie if any because she got kidnapped in the original game, as she usually does in the games, and the first movie tried to give her more to do, it tried to give her more agency; she was definitely not a damsel in distress in that movie at all, and that was on purpose because of the perception for a long time that the deception of Princess Peach in the games and her always being the damsel in distress was sexist; and they wanted to fix that in that film by having Luigi get kidnapped instead of her, and having her be more strong and proactive in stopping Bowser and trying to protect her kingdom. So, will she still get kidnapped? And if so, will she do anything to escape? Will she free herself? Will she ultimately help Mario and Rosalina defeat Bowser and save the Lumas? And with the Super Mario Bros. part of the title being taken out and it just being called Super Mario, will Luigi even have a role? Will he even be in this movie? And if he is going to be in it? What role will he play in the story? Because there is a way they can integrate Luigi into the story since he was in the first Mario Galaxy game. They had this alternate mode where you could play the game as Luigi on a higher difficulty if you beat the entire game with Mario first. If Luigi is in the movie, will be more of a buddy adventure where Mario and Luigi are working together, or will it will be a Mario only adventure and Luigi will have his own separate adventure, his own subplot while the main plot with Mario plays out?
What about Toad 🍄? Toad 🍄 was a major character in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, so will he be in the second one, and will he have a big role? And what about Yoshi? They teased Yoshi in the first movie, in an after credit scene, so how are they going to pay that off, and integrate Yoshi into the movie? Also, Bowser, Bowser got shrunk at the end of the last one? Are they going to explain how he grew back to normal size and how he broke from prison? They don’t have to explain it, since the games never explain how Bowser always comes back after being defeated at the end of each of them. But, since this is a movie, I’m thinking maybe they want a little bit more continuity and have things from the previous movie carry over into the next one, so maybe they’ll delve into how Bowser escapes and returns to kidnap Princess Peach and steal the Power Stars from the Comet Observatory as revenge for her not accepting his marriage proposal and crashing the wedding immediately afterwards. Like, maybe him escaping is what triggers the series of events that leads to the Power Stars getting stolen (by him) and Rosalina having to ask Mario to help her get them back so that she can power the Observatory and maintain her role as the guardian of the cosmos.
There isn’t much to the trailer itself. It just shows Mario sleeping against a tree 😴🌳, and then it follows this butterfly 🦋 as it’s flying all around the Mushroom Kingdom 🍄 until it flies up into the sky, and then into space, and that’s when we get the title: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. So, it’s a space butterfly 🦋. Nothing about what the story might be, although people could make educated guesses based on what it’s based on. I mean, I wasn’t really expecting to see that much since it’s an announcement trailer, and announcement trailers don’t tell us that much. I mean, the announcement trailer to Dunkirk pretty much told us nothing about what the movie was about, although people could make educated guesses based on the title alone; same goes for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie, The Odyssey (2026). I’m sure they’ll release more trailers later on that will tell us more about what it’s about, and when they do release another trailer, a much more meatier trailer, I’ll be sure to write a post about it on here. I can’t wait to see this movie, I really liked the first one, it was one of my favorite movies of 2023, and I’m sure I’ll probably like this one as well when it comes out next April. It is funny though that the two movies that I’m most excited for in 2026 and 2027 respectively both have to do with space. Both The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the MonsterVerse are getting their In Space sequel; though Godzilla x Kong: Supernova probably won’t take place in space, but the threat will be from space.
I don’t know if I’ll actually be able to see it in theaters though because the current pattern with me and movies that I want to see in theaters is that I don’t get to see them in theaters. I wanted to see A Working Man ♂︎ in theaters, and I didn’t get to, I wanted to see Novocaine (2025) in theaters and I didn’t get to, I wanted to see Mickey 17 in theaters and I didn’t get to, I wanted to see The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie in theaters and I didn’t get to, I wanted to see Sinners in theaters and I didn’t get to, I wanted to see Shadow Force (2025) in theaters and I didn’t get to, I wanted to see Fight or Flight ✈️ in theaters and I didn’t get to, I wanted to see Jurassic World Rebirth in theaters and I didn’t get to, I wanted to see Nobody 2 in theaters and I didn’t get to, and I wanted to see Primitive War in theaters and I didn’t get to. So, given how this year has gone so far, I’m starting to doubt whether or not I’ll be able to go see this movie in theaters when it comes. But, I’ll try, and if I do, you’ll be the first ones to read about it.
